Goal 5: Demonstrate the capacity to create a positive environment that encourages science learning by modeling the attitudes and dispositions of scientific inquiry.
Children look up to their teachers so much. They yearn to please us and mimic what we do. In order to have a positive science community to learn in, the teacher must model and demonstrate the attitude and skills students need. In order to do so, teachers should model their expectations of students through their very own behaviors. For example, teachers should have their very own science notebook and model how they use it and should be using it alongside of their students to learn. Also, in order to be able to model for students teachers need to take part in professional development to appropriately learn how to model inquiry in the classroom. This semester I had various opportunities to get first hand experiences on what inquiry looks like and carry it into the classroom. Additionally, teachers must carry the enthusiasm they expect to see in their students. Our energy directly transfers from us to our students. This is something that I have really worked on this semester and will continue to work on. Even when I feel like I am being enthusiastic I need to kick it up another two notches!
