Classroom Management Philosophy
"I believe collaborative management is the best theory there is. Everyone teaches everyone. Students teach us and we teach them. Students, teachers, and parents, are partners in the learning process. Working together as parts of a puzzle we can complete the puzzle."
From the course readings it has become very evident that I am a huge fan of collaboration. I love students working together. Not only do I enjoy students working together, I enjoy parents, teachers, and students all working together for the academic success of the students. This is not a one person do all kind of thing.
I personally feel like we learn best from each other. Being able to work in groups and hear one another’s thoughts is one of the most valued things in my classroom. It not only provides us with more information, it allows us to see things from multiple perspectives causing critical thinking.
A reading that I strongly valued that reflects my beliefs from this course was the Linda Albert’s Chapter on Cooperative Discipline. Albert’s suggests that students need to learn to be in control of themselves. I love this idea. In my classroom when conflicts occur I am going to have peer mediation. This will be collaboratively done and the students will become responsible for their own behaviors and come to a consensus and/or pay the consequences. Another thing Albert’s suggests is the way you react to situations affects the outcomes that are provided. I completely agree. When students need to be disciplined I will watch the way I approach them and what I say. You are a role model and you provide examples for the way you want your students to behave.
Another reading that related to my beliefs was Chapter Four of Levin and Nolan. This chapter discussed different approaches to classroom management. My beliefs follow the collaborative management theory. I do not think that everything should be up to the student or teacher. I believe part of building a community takes the work of the students and teachers and that can be done through collaborative management. I plan to make options available for my students. These options will limit them in some sense but still give them a choice, essentially giving them a voice. I believe that rule making should be done together. If the students feel like they took part in making “their” rules then they will take more ownership and pride in the rules. It also makes the students more aware of the rules of the classroom.
Everything in this world whether we choose to admit it or not takes the act of things working together. I feel the classroom is the same way and cannot function without students, teachers, and parents working together in partnership. In my head my classroom is a puzzle and the students, parents, and me are all trying to work together to put it together. It is a challenge because disagreements occur but in the end every piece fits and students succeed.
